Description

Epimedium is a hardy perennial that is native to southern China but can also be found growing in the rest of Asia as well as parts of Europe.  Most of the 60 species with the Epimedium genus display four petal flowers in the spring that are described as spider like. In some species the petals produce long spurs which are much greater in size than the sepals. This gives the plant an inverted crown shape of the flower thus lending the moniker “Bishop’s Hat” The plant is a popular garden plant in China and Japan and has become recently better known in the West.

Aphrodisiac

Epimedium has long been valued for its properties as a powerful aphrodisiac. It even got its name: “Horny goat Weed” from a legend that a Chinese goat herder once discovered how randy his flock became after eating the purported weed. It has been sold as a health supplement alone or blended with other supplements as it is in the Zenerect: the natural way to achieve rock hard erections.

Science has recently backed up the speculation of epicedium’s ability by revealing the plant active ingredient as the flavonol, icariin. Like a synthetically produced infamous drug, icariin has been shown to help increase levels of nitric oxide and to inhibit PDE-5 activity. These two actions help smooth penile muscle tissue which causes more blood flow to the penis allowing for harder and longer lasting erections. In fact according to one recently published Italian study, icariin has been shown to be more specific in the up regulation of genes that are associated with nitric oxide production than another famous drug.

Icariin has also been shown to mimic the effects of testosterone which might also explain why epimedium is so popular as an aphrodisiac since increased testosterone can help improve strength and vitality leading to longer bouts of love making.  Animal studies have shown promise of this flavonol  as an antioxidant, antidepressant , memory enhancer and as a possible therapeutic agent for the treatment of osteoporosis.
